A former adviser to Kuchma spoke about the EU’s new plan regarding Ukraine
22.10.2025 - 12:02The decision to hold the summit in Budapest was mutual for Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, while Russia’s conditions for peace in Ukraine remain unchanged.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said during a press briefing.
“The elements of our position are well known to everyone; they have been clearly outlined by the president. So far, there are no new developments on this matter,” Peskov stated.
According to him, the meeting between Trump and Putin requires thorough preparation, since “no one wants to waste time.”
“Neither President Trump nor President Putin wants to waste time. These are two leaders who are used to working efficiently and achieving concrete results. But efficiency always requires preparation,” Peskov noted, commenting on Trump’s earlier remark that he didn’t want to “waste time” at the upcoming summit.
He added that the peace process has effectively stalled, and the situation now requires intervention by the leaders of Russia and the United States.
“Indeed, the current pause requires action at the highest level. But such intervention must be well-prepared,” he emphasized.
Peskov also confirmed that no date has yet been set for the meeting.
Media reports earlier stated that Moscow is demanding the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas as a condition for ending hostilities — a demand that Ukraine has rejected.
