In the West, there is growing concern over the possibility of a pro-Kremlin party led by Robert Fico coming to power in Slovakia. This party currently leads in the polls.
“The former prime minister does not hide his sympathies toward the Kremlin and has accused “Ukrainian nationalists and fascists” of provoking Russian President Vladimir Putin into initiating the invasion”, as stated in the article.
Fico has called on the Slovak government to halt weapon shipments to Kyiv and stated that if he becomes prime minister, Slovakia will cease arms deliveries. He is also against Ukraine’s accession to NATO (Slovakia is a member of the Alliance and could potentially block Ukraine’s membership).
The popularity of his party can be attributed to high inflation, an energy crisis, and the failures of right-wing parties in addressing corruption.
If Fico’s party wins, it will likely need at least one coalition partner.
Fico has not ruled out cooperation with the “Republic,” an extreme-right party that claims the war in Ukraine is a result of “NATO expansionist policies” and “Kiev’s aggression against the Russian minority in eastern Ukraine.”
