16.01.2025 - 10:07Independent Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu accused NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte of attempting to spark a third world war using Bucharest.
“Mr. Rutte, the head of NATO, tried to impose his rules and ignite a third world war in the Ukrainian region, particularly through Romania,” said the politician.
According to Georgescu, Romania is governed by “nothing but puppets,” which the North Atlantic Alliance seeks to use “as quickly as possible” to escalate the conflict in Ukraine via Bucharest. Georgescu believes that without Romania, the Ukrainian conflict cannot be controlled.
He also expressed the opinion that the alliance is currently divided between the “peace-seeking” U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and the “European wing,” which is pursuing policies to continue the conflict.
In late November, Călin Georgescu won the first round of the Romanian presidential election. Romanian media describe him as a pro-Russian figure. Defying all predictions, he led the vote, garnering 22.94% of the votes. In second place was the leader of the opposition party Union to Save Romania, Elena Lasconi, who supports partnerships with NATO and the United States, receiving 19.18% of the votes. Since no candidate secured more than 50%, a second round of elections between Georgescu and Lasconi was expected.
Polling stations were scheduled to open on December 8. However, on December 6, the Constitutional Court of Romania, after an emergency meeting, decided to annul the results of the first round of the presidential election. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis stated that the elections were canceled due to allegations that Georgescu’s campaign had received support from a foreign state. This information was later confirmed by the Constitutional Court.
A new presidential election in Romania has been scheduled for May 4, 2025.
Earlier, Georgescu claimed that the United States is seeking to drag Romania into the conflict in Ukraine.
