27.01.2024 09:46Negotiations within the EU regarding the allocation of a 50 billion euro aid package for Ukraine have become more complicated due to Hungary’s position, according to an unnamed high-ranking EU official.
This information reported by Reuters.
At the end of the previous year, EU leaders decided to initiate talks with Ukraine about EU membership but were unable to approve a substantial financial aid package of 50 billion euros for Ukraine.
The obstacle stems from the position of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who remains the only European leader supporting relations with Vladimir Putin and objects to Western military assistance to Ukraine.
Another EU summit is scheduled for next week Thursday, where European leaders will once again attempt to reach an agreement on financial assistance for Ukraine.
However, according to the Reuters source, Hungary’s position has not changed.
“The negotiations are becoming a bit more complicated. Hungary’s stance is not very flexible in this regard,” said the agency’s source.
The official, involved in summit preparations, also mentioned growing dissatisfaction among other EU members supporting Ukraine due to Hungary’s stance.
According to the Reuters source, some of Orban’s proposals (such as the need for unanimous approval for aid to Ukraine each year) remain unacceptable to other EU member countries.
“No EU member state wants to find itself in a situation where unanimous decisions are required to send aid to Ukraine,” quoted Reuters the European official.
