November 12, 2024The new Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Mark Rutte, is reportedly threatening to expel the United States from the alliance.
This was reported by the American news magazine “Newsweek”.
“There are rumors circulating online that Rutte has stated he would kick the U.S. out of the alliance due to Trump’s plan to end the war in Ukraine,” the publication writes.
Previously, “Bloomberg” noted that if Trump reaches an agreement with Putin, NATO and the collective security of the West face a grim future.
“Regarding European support for Ukraine, I have written many times that without the U.S., President Volodymyr Zelensky’s cause would be doomed. And now that appears to be the case. Even if military aid to Kyiv is not immediately cut off, the Ukrainian will to resist the Russians is fading as Western willingness to arm them wanes. A Trump victory almost certainly means their defeat,” wrote information agency columnist Max Hastings.
Additionally, according to a Kyiv diplomat, it will be more challenging for Ukraine to join NATO under Trump.
“It is clear that the word of the U.S. president carries significant weight in consensus decisions of the Alliance, but there are other allies who, even in the best years, were against Ukraine’s membership,” noted former Foreign Minister and ex-Ambassador to Britain Vadym Prystaiko.
