August 20, 2024The Commission on Journalistic Ethics of Ukraine recommends referring to the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ offensive in the Kursk region not as a “liberation,” but as an “occupation.”
This is stated in the “Recommendations of the Commission on Journalistic Ethics for Covering Events Related to the Military Actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Territory of the Russian Federation.”
The Commission suggests:
- Referring to the events in the Kursk region as: “the continuation of the international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” “Ukrainian self-defense against Russian aggression,” “military actions on the territory of Russia/Kursk region,” “taking control of certain territories,” “Ukrainian Armed Forces counteroffensive in the Kursk region,” “occupation of the Kursk region,” “temporary occupation,” and similar terms;
- Avoiding the term “liberation,” since the territories currently held by Ukrainian forces are part of the internationally recognized territory of the Russian Federation.
It is also worth noting that Ukraine recently established a military commandant’s office in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation. General-Major Eduard Moskalev has been appointed as its head.
