October 30, 2024Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko spoke out against mobilizing police officers for military service.
He made this statement during an interview with a Radio Liberty journalist.
The journalist asked him why police officers, who are trained professionals in good health, are not being sent to fight, noting that physical fitness is a requirement for entry into law enforcement.
Klymenko responded, “You say a police officer is trained. A police officer is trained to use force and weapons against criminals. But that has nothing to do with trenches, fortifications, or actions as part of a unit, platoon, or company. Shooting at a criminal with a firearm… And when special forces take down a criminal organization, that’s one thing—they operate in cities, not in fields or forests.”
As of early 2024, about 100,000 police officers serve in Ukraine, 90% of whom are exempt from mobilization. Many are involved in assisting Territorial Recruitment Centers with the compulsory mobilization of citizens.
It’s worth noting that the National Police criticized calls to mobilize police officers last year.
