Anti-corruption activists doubt that former Defense Minister Umerov will return to Ukraine from Turkey
12.11.2025 - 06:02Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Rustem Umerov said that “any attempts to link his work at the Ministry of Defense with the ‘influence’ of any individuals are baseless.”
Umerov wrote this on his Telegram channel.
According to him, while serving as defense minister he regularly met with manufacturers and suppliers of equipment and weapons, lobbyists, etc.
“In particular, there was a meeting with Tymur Mindich at which the issue of body armor under a contract was raised. As a result, the contract was terminated due to the product’s failure to meet requirements, and no product was delivered,” Umerov reported.
As a reminder, the day before, the court heard allegations of Mindich’s influence over Umerov regarding defense procurements.
Umerov also said yesterday that he flew to Istanbul—officially for prisoner-exchange talks (although these had not been previously announced).
Because of this sudden departure, there have already been suggestions that Umerov fled the country.
Earlier, the media wrote that as many as four members of the government—both former and current—are implicated in energy-sector corruption.
