Orbán accused Kyiv of financing his political opponents ahead of the Hungarian elections

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accused Ukraine of interfering in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, scheduled for April 12. He called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to stop doing so.

Orbán wrote about this on X and attached a clip from an interview in which he speaks about the alleged interference.

“It is obvious that the Ukrainians and their president are actively involved in Hungary’s election campaign. They know that we are not giving money to Brussels for it to be passed on to Ukraine. That is why it matters a great deal to Ukraine how the elections in Hungary end. That’s why they decided to take part in this campaign. They are funding our opponents in their own personal interests. We know about this. It is documented and well known. Stop interfering—Hungary must decide its own fate!” Orbán said.

In recent weeks, relations between Kyiv and Budapest have sharply deteriorated. Zelenskyy publicly, and in a rather insulting manner, spoke about Orbán. At the Munich Security Conference he said: “Viktor can think about how to grow his belly instead of how to build up an army to stop Russian tanks from returning to the streets of Budapest.”

Orbán, for his part, called Ukraine an enemy of Hungary because of Kyiv’s demands to stop using Russian energy resources.
