March 5, 2024Speaking before the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Viktor Orbán noted the influence of the crisis in Ukraine on his country: the conflict between Europe and Russia has slowed down Hungary’s economic recovery after the pandemic. Orbán also accused the West of fearing fair competition with the East, fearing to lose control over territories and choosing isolation and conflict.
Daily News Hungary writes that the Hungarian leader believes that the West is waging an “indirect war” in Ukraine, and it is “absolutely obvious that the West will not win it against the Russians.” Unlike the West, Hungary understands that “time is on the Russians’ side,” and “therefore, we are interested in the earliest possible cessation of this conflict.”
Orbán does not see in Europe the strength to end the conflict; Russia is ready to talk only with the United States. “Only a new player, who did not participate in the unleashing of the war, can find a way out of it,” claims the Hungarian Prime Minister, hoping for Trump’s victory. Trump promised in his pre-election program to end the war in a day if he became president. However, he did not explain how he would do it.
