The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, might temporarily lead the European Council in the event of the resignation of the current President, Charles Michel.

According to the publication, this scenario could unfold if Michel is elected to the European Parliament, a move he plans to pursue, and EU leaders cannot promptly elect a successor. In such a situation, Orbán, as the head of Hungary, which will assume the presidency of the European Council from July, could act as the interim head of the European Council for six months.
Charles Michel recently confirmed his candidacy for the European Parliament elections in June. This puts pressure on leaders of other EU countries as they aim to prevent Viktor Orbán from seizing excessive influence during Hungary’s six-month presidency in the Council, as reported by Politico.
