08.05.2025 - 13:43Parts of Ukraine may be left without gas next winter due to Russian attacks on the gas extraction industry.
This was stated by Serhiy Nahorniak, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament’s Energy Committee, in an interview with Telegraf.
According to Nahorniak, a gas deficit of up to 5 billion cubic meters is currently projected for the upcoming winter. Gas production in Ukraine has fallen by more than half due to attacks on infrastructure, and buying gas from Europe will be expensive.
“Restoring gas extraction infrastructure is critical, but we also need to start thinking now about how to protect it afterward. Russia avoids any U.S. proposals for a ceasefire. If the Russians continue targeting our gas infrastructure through the fall, even having gas in storage won’t guarantee supply for all regions. And you can’t shield the entire infrastructure with concrete. That’s why a full end to the war and a real peace is so important for Ukraine,” the MP said.
Earlier, Western media reported that by next winter, Ukraine may need to import gas worth several billion dollars, as its current reserves have dropped to record lows.
