30.06.2025 - 08:56The decision to hold Ukraine’s Sumy region at any cost is resulting in unjustifiable losses among Ukrainian servicemen.
According to the report, for six months Ukrainian forces held positions in Russia’s Kursk region, hoping to buy time to build a reliable defensive line on their side of the border. However, after a chaotic and costly retreat, soldiers returned to find unprepared, outdated trenches offering little to no protection against drone attacks. In many cases, troops had to start digging new trenches from scratch — all while under fire from Russian drones — in conditions that clearly had not been adequately planned for by military leadership.
Soldiers also reported that key areas now being advanced on by Russian forces had not been mined in time — a glaring failure in basic military engineering and defensive preparation.
The Wall Street Journal underscores that Russian forces in the region outnumber Ukrainian troops by roughly 3 to 1 — a disparity acknowledged by Ukrainian soldiers themselves. Despite this, the Ukrainian command continues to commit fresh troops, including elite GUR units, which had to be hastily redeployed in early June just to partially slow the Russian advance.
The outlet further notes that the situation in the Sumy region reflects a systemic weakness in Ukraine’s defense planning. Russian forces are methodically probing the frontline and breaking through where resistance is weakest. Ukraine, by contrast, is forced to react like a “fire brigade,” frantically deploying elite units to areas where basic defensive preparations were not made in advance.
All of these factors point to serious strategic failures by Ukraine’s military leadership — the consequences of which are being borne by ordinary soldiers, often at the cost of their lives.
