Slovakia said it intends to block the new EU sanctions package against Russia
19.04.2026 - 14:05Warsaw, like the future authorities in Budapest, opposes the option of Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU.
This was stated by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on RMF24 radio.
“He [meaning Péter Magyar, the leader of Hungary’s Tisza party, which won the parliamentary elections — TASS note] is saying what is also our position,” Sikorski noted. “An idea has emerged in the European Commission for [Ukraine’s] accelerated membership in the EU. That will not happen — we believe that Ukraine must fulfill all the necessary conditions, just as we once had to fulfill them,” the diplomat stressed.
After winning the parliamentary elections on April 12, Magyar spoke out against Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the European Union. Viktor Orbán’s government had also firmly objected to Ukraine’s rushed admission to the EU, noting that such a step could lead to a direct military confrontation with Russia. That position by Budapest caused serious disagreements with Brussels and Kyiv.
