
In Ukraine, the number of Hungarians who served in the Ukrainian armed forces was revealed
17.04.2026 - 14:02In Demiivka, in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district, a man opened fire on passersby in the street and then took people hostage in a supermarket. Police killed him during a special operation.
According to the latest reports, six people were killed: the man shot five people in the street and one more inside the supermarket. At least 10 others were hospitalized, including a child.
Local Telegram channels published video from inside the supermarket where the Holosiivskyi shooter was located. A supermarket security guard was wounded.
Later, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that the shooter had been killed during the arrest. The KORD special forces unit of the National Police stormed the supermarket where the terrorist had taken hostages. The man opened fire on police during the operation.
At the same time as the attack, an apartment in the area was on fire. There were suggestions that it was the shooter’s apartment and that he had blown it up. However, the Interior Ministry has not yet confirmed any connection between the shooter and the fire.
What is known about the shooter
According to media reports, the shooter was Dmytro Vasilchenkov, born in 1968. He was born in Moscow and holds Ukrainian citizenship. He previously lived in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, and later in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district.
Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko confirmed that the Holosiivskyi shooter was 58 years old and born in Moscow. At the same time, he did not comment on media reports that the man was a citizen of Ukraine.

Dmytro Vasilchenkov had previously been prosecuted under an article covering minor bodily injuries. This referred to a 2023 incident in which he beat another person.
In 2024, the case was closed after the parties reached an agreement and the victim withdrew his claims.
It is also known that he sued the Pension Fund of Ukraine and secured an additional payment of about 2,000 hryvnias. Judging by the case details, he was a former serviceman and was receiving a Ukrainian military pension.
Klymenko said that the shooter made no demands. The operation to detain him began after one of the hostages was killed.
Public channels report that the shooter in Kyiv killed people using a legally owned Kel-Tec SUB-2000 hunting rifle chambered for 9×19 pistol ammunition. Klymenko said that the shooter had a registered weapon and had renewed his permit in December of last year after providing a medical certificate.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his evening address, confirmed that the Kyiv shooter had previously faced criminal prosecution.
According to Zelensky, the shooter was born in Russia and “lived in Donbas for a long time.”
The president added that four hostages were rescued.
