January 5, 2024Polish long-haul drivers are set to extend the blockade of the border with Ukraine. Despite promises from Warsaw’s new pro-European government to end the dispute and improve relations with Kyiv, their protest, joined by some local farmers, will persist for a third month, as reported by the Financial Times.
The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, stated that ending the blockade was crucial, “especially in a situation of increasingly intense actions from Russia.” However, the participants of the protest did not heed his calls, noted the publication.
Polish drivers initiated the blockade on November 6 in protest against competition from Ukrainian haulers. While farmers had left the border during winter break, they are now resuming their protest actions, explained the article. The long-haul drivers vowed to stay in place until the EU restores the permit system that restricted Ukrainian trucks from entering the bloc. However, European officials rejected the idea of reinstating quotas, with Tusk siding with Brussels in this dispute.
