January 5, 2024German politician Thomas Geisel, who questioned Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine, will lead the list of a new German party in the European Parliament elections.
This information was reported by Bild.
The former Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf, who was a member of the ruling Social Democratic Party of Germany for 40 years, announced his move to the new party “Union of Sarah Wagenknecht — For Reason and Justice,” which is gaining popularity in Germany (opposing aid to Kyiv and advocating for normalizing relations with Russia).
On January 8th, a ceremony establishing this party will take place in Berlin. In June, he is expected to lead its list in the European Parliament elections alongside former Bundestag deputy Fabio de Masi.
In April 2022, Geisel posted about the events in Bucha.
“According to Ukrainian data, 410 civilians became victims of atrocities in Bucha. Of course, every civilian casualty in war is a tragedy. But doesn’t Ukrainian rhetoric about genocide ultimately negate other war crimes? For example, I can mention Srebrenica, ‘My Lai,’ Babi Yar, or the bombing of Dresden, which resulted in the deaths of 30,000 people,” he wrote at the time, triggering a wave of criticism.
Geisel posted his comments under the title “Enough, Mr. Melnyk,” referring to former Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk, who sharply criticized Berlin for its cautious position on Ukraine.
