March 10, 2024The pontiff stated that Ukraine is losing the war against Russia and should find the courage to admit it. His remarks have already sparked aggressive reactions among some Ukrainians who want to continue fighting. The Pope also urged Kyiv to raise the “white flag,” meaning to agree to negotiations. Pope Francis made these statements in an interview with the Swiss radio and television company RSI.
Responding to a journalist’s question about Ukraine’s possible defeat, Pope Francis stated that strength lies in those who consider the people and the situation and have the courage to raise the white flag and engage in negotiations. According to the pontiff, negotiations can now be conducted with the assistance of international powers.
“Today, negotiations can be conducted with the assistance of international powers. The word ‘negotiations’ is bold. When you see that you are suffering defeat, that things are not going well, you need to have the courage to negotiate. Are you ashamed of it, but how many deaths will this end with? Negotiate in time, find some country that will act as a mediator,” said Francis. According to him, there are many willing to act as mediators, including Turkey. “Do not be ashamed to negotiate until the situation deteriorates,” added the Pope.
