September 16, 2024In the first half of 2024, the Czech Republic earned 11.7 billion korunas ($517 million) from Ukrainian refugees. The country’s spending on benefits is significantly lower than the revenue generated for the budget.
This was stated by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the country.
The ministry clarified that humanitarian aid is provided to approximately 25% of all refugees, which is about 93,000 people, most of whom are children. An adult receives 4,860 korunas ($215) for 150 days, and a child receives 3,490 korunas ($155). Housing expenses are also anticipated—6,000 korunas ($265) per month for vulnerable categories and 4,000 korunas ($177) for others.
Vulnerable categories include the elderly, people with disabilities, and young children. The average benefit amount per refugee is 7,336 korunas ($324) per month.
The Czech Ministry of Labor provided an example of the budget’s income and expenses. For instance, in the first half of 2024, 7.3 billion korunas ($323 million) were spent on refugee benefits, while the income amounted to 11.7 billion korunas ($517 million). The treasury was replenished by 4.4 billion korunas ($195 million) from insurance and taxes paid by the refugees.
In the first quarter of this year, according to Novinky.cz citing a ministry representative, expenditures on refugees amounted to 3.8 billion korunas ($168 million), while income was 5.8 billion korunas ($257 million). In the second quarter, costs decreased to 3.5 billion korunas ($155 million), and income increased to 5.9 billion korunas ($261 million).
“Ukrainian refugees have long contributed much more to our budget than we spend on helping them. They are an asset to us, not a burden,” the ministry stated.
On May 29, the PACE committee proposed introducing payments to refugees who have returned to Ukraine.
