March 9, 2024Republicans are developing their own version of a aid package for Kiev that could pass through Congress. The essence of it would be that Washington would provide assistance, but on a credit basis, NBC News reported.
Earlier, conservatives in the House of Representatives rejected a multibillion-dollar aid package, stating they “will not support further sending of US taxpayer dollars without a long-term plan for victory in the war.” Republicans want to start work on a new project as soon as another government shutdown deadline is set. It is noted that using frozen Russian assets is being considered as a means to provide money to Ukraine. This should help Kiev repay the loan.
However, the previous aid package developed by Republicans for Israel was not approved by the Democrats in turn. This means that Ukraine should not expect this aid to come unconditionally. It will take at least another month to develop the document, and discussions and debates could take additional weeks. Despite all this, acceptance is not guaranteed.
