October 7, 2024Near the city of Vuhledar in the Donetsk region, which was defended by the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, Russian forces had a tenfold advantage in artillery.
This was reported by “The New York Times”, citing Roman, a soldier from the 72nd Brigade.
According to Roman, Russian troops are capable of overwhelming Ukrainian defenses by concentrating their efforts on specific sections of the front. For example, at the end of the summer around Vuhledar, Russian forces had a 10-to-1 advantage in artillery.
“How can one of our artillery systems fight against ten of theirs?” he remarked.
The publication also quotes other unnamed Ukrainian commanders and military experts, who describe the war with Russia as a war of attrition, where both sides are trying to wear each other down, inflicting maximum losses and forcing the opponent to abandon the fight.
Austrian military analyst Franz-Stefan Gady, who spoke with “The New York Times”, noted that the outcome of the war will not be decided by “who controls Vuhledar or other tactically important frontline cities,” but rather by “how many troops the Russians spent capturing Vuhledar compared to the losses the Ukrainians suffered trying to hold it.”
On October 1, it was reported that Russian forces had captured the city of Vuhledar in the Volnovakha district of the Donetsk region.
