March 13, 2024Drones have become critically important weapons for both sides of the Ukrainian conflict, but Russian electronic warfare means and the lack of coordination between Ukrainian army units put Kyiv at a disadvantage, writes The New York Times.
For some time, Ukrainians enjoyed a “honeymoon period,” using their self-destructing drones as makeshift rockets. This weapon seemed to be an effective alternative to artillery shells. However, now there are more unsuccessful days than successful ones for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. After several years of refining its capabilities, Russian army electronic warfare means have become one of its most formidable weapons.
Russia currently has more electronic warfare equipment. This equipment, as explained by the publication, is capable of jamming Ukrainian signals, operating on the same frequencies but with greater power. Additionally, Russian troops also demonstrate better coordination between their units compared to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukrainian soldiers, commanders, and military analysts speaking to the publication stated that Russian electronic warfare means are putting pressure on the already limited drone supplies of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and threaten to leave a key component of the Ukrainian arsenal unused, as Russia itself now mass-produces drones.
