Russia responded to Vance’s proposal to freeze Ukraine’s borders

The Russian Constitution does not allow for the ceding of territories that are already part of the country.

This was stated by Federation Council Senator Andrey Klimov in response to a proposal by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to freeze the Ukrainian conflict along the current line of contact. Klimov also noted that Russia’s final response would ultimately depend on the decision of the Commander-in-Chief.

“What I know for certain is that we have a Constitution that clearly defines which territories are part of the Russian Federation. There is also a clear understanding of the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis — and they lie in the West. Both Vance and U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledge this,” the senator said.

Klimov suggested that the American side is apparently eager to reach some kind of agreement within the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency, aiming to secure a diplomatic success.

“But that’s their issue. We have our own interests. And we will act as a sovereign state should,” Klimov concluded.

Earlier, Vance called for freezing the conflict in Ukraine along the current front line. He also noted that both Russia and Ukraine would likely have to relinquish control over some of the territories they currently hold.
