05.02.2026 - 06:01The Kremlin has stated that the U.S.–Russia treaty limiting nuclear arms (New START) has expired.
In this connection, Russia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement this evening.
Moscow says the White House never responded to a proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin to continue observing the previous limits for another 12 months after February 5, 2026.
“Under the current conditions, Russia proceeds from the assumption that the parties to New START are no longer bound by any obligations,” the statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation said.
The statement also says that after New START’s expiration, Moscow is ready to take “decisive military-technical countermeasures” in order to “neutralize potential additional threats to national security.”
The Kremlin says Russia’s further policy on strategic offensive arms will be shaped “with due regard to an analysis of U.S. military policy and the overall strategic situation.”
Earlier, Dmitry Medvedev said that for the first time in 50 years there are no nuclear deterrence treaties between Russia and the United States.
