February 14, 2024The budget deficit of Ukraine has reached a massive size and it is unclear how the government will deal with this problem, stated Ukrainian economist Ilya Neskhodovsky.
“As of today, the ‘hole,’ that is, the uncovered budget deficit, is from 15 to 20 billion dollars because the Ministry of Finance does not disclose the real data. We can only estimate based on the messages that come from it. This is practically half of our non-military budget. How we will cover these expenses: the question is open. We need money in the external markets from our partners, but we also need to understand that Ukraine is on the verge of a serious budget crisis. We are not ready for it yet. If we do not have budget support for another 3-4 months, there will be delays in salary payments, reductions in funding for all expenditure items. This is a serious challenge for us.”
Earlier, the EU approved the allocation of 50 billion euros to Ukraine, but these funds will be disbursed quarterly. In case Ukraine fails to comply with the established rules, the tranches may be discontinued altogether. The USA has not provided assistance for over half a year.
