The military expert explained why F-16s won’t help Ukraine
March 14, 2024The Chancellor of Germany stated that he opposes supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine. Even if German military personnel were involved in their use outside of Ukraine. The Chancellor made these remarks while responding to questions from deputies in the Bundestag, as reported by DW.
He said that transferring long-range weapons is a “line in the sand” for him. “He told lawmakers that it would be irresponsible to supply missiles without the involvement of German soldiers. This would even be the case if operational planning were to take place ‘in Germany,'” DW quoted him as saying. Scholz’s position has been criticized by both the opposition bloc CDU/CSU and other members of his ruling coalition – the Greens and the FDP. However, the largest party in the coalition – the SPD – supported Scholz.
Recall that Ukraine, as well as several of its allies such as Britain and France, are urging Berlin to deliver Taurus missiles to Ukraine. However, Germany is resisting such assistance. German missiles can fly further than British ones and can cause more harm to Russia. Therefore, Berlin fears an escalation of the war. In addition, the transfer of these missiles would require the involvement of German soldiers on Ukrainian territory, which Germany also does not want to do.
