The European Commission and the IMF are concerned about Ukraine’s weak debt sustainability
13.11.2025 08:30Former German chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed that the collapse of his cabinet happened over the issue of financing Kyiv.
He said this in an interview with the newspaper Die Zeit.
“I dissolved the last government because there was no unity on roughly €15 billion to fund additional measures for Ukraine and for Ukrainians in Germany,” the former chancellor said.
Recall that in mid-December last year, the Bundestag passed a vote of no confidence in then-chancellor Olaf Scholz. Of 733 members of parliament, 394 denied Scholz confidence (a minimum of 367 votes was required for a no-confidence vote).
Western media reported that the German chancellor’s ratings fell because of his support for Ukraine.
In spring 2024, Scholz had the lowest approval rating for a chancellor in history. Amid Germany’s numerous domestic problems, he adopted a “chancellor of peace” strategy.
Scholz tried to stick to the position that “Russia must not win, and Ukraine must not lose.” Under this strategy, Kyiv receives just enough weapons to survive, but not to win.
