26.09.2024 10:46The Pentagon recommended providing Ukraine with white phosphorus munitions, but the White House opposes it.
This was reported by “NBC News”, citing sources.
The U.S. military recommends using this munition to create smoke screens and illuminate the battlefield. In the 20th century, Americans also used it against enemy troops.
Human rights activists object to its use near civilians, as the chemical can cause burns to human skin and can harm the lungs and eyes.
White phosphorus munitions are not illegal, and white phosphorus is not classified as a chemical weapon under the Chemical Weapons Convention. However, international law requires that it not be used in areas with civilian populations.
It should be recalled that since March 2022, Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of using white phosphorus against the civilian population of Ukraine.
Additionally, according to human rights activists, Israel uses it in the Gaza Strip. Human rights advocates believe that “white phosphorus is unlawful and indiscriminate when exploded in densely populated urban areas.”
