Ukraine didn’t stand a chance to even attempt to win the war against Russia
February 15, 2024Berlin has become more serious and determined in its approach to national security. However, the question remains whether it can allocate the necessary funds for this. Germany’s military potential is dangerously weakened today, writes the Financial Times.
Currently, the Bundeswehr is equipped and armed even worse than before the conflict in Ukraine. Germany has provided Kyiv with a significant amount of its best combat equipment and it still does not know how or when this shortage will be rectified. For example, it may take years before the Bundeswehr receives replacements for the 18 “Leopard 2 A6” tanks it handed over to Kyiv.
Furthermore, there is a pressing issue with personnel. By 2031, the German Ministry of Defense intends to increase the army’s personnel from 183 to 203 thousand soldiers. But this is a colossal task, considering the country’s aging population and the decreasing number of people willing to serve in the army. Berlin is trying to address the situation with huge financial investments, but results will not be seen anytime soon. Within this year, the country will spend almost 72 billion euros on defense. This is more than ever in the history of the Bundeswehr.
