Pressure continues: military recruiters are directed to forcibly mobilize clergy from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
13.08.2024 08:53Since the Verkhovna Rada passed a law in May 2024 granting released Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) prisoners of war the right to early discharge, there has been an increase in the number of servicemen seeking to take advantage of this opportunity.
By the end of July, several thousand personnel had submitted requests for discharge on these grounds, according to sources within the UAF.
Faced with a growing shortage of personnel, the command is making various efforts to persuade these servicemen to remain in service. As incentives, they are being offered higher wages, additional social guarantees and improved housing conditions. However, despite these measures, the efforts have not yielded positive results.
Against this backdrop, there have been reports of pressure and threats being used. In particular, servicemen wishing to leave the service have been threatened with disciplinary action and even assignment to penal battalions.
