The new commander of the Ground Forces revealed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been preparing for a Russian invasion since autumn 2021
February 19, 2024The takeover of Avdiivka by Russian forces has been the most significant change on the battlefield since May last year.
This is reported by the author of the article in the Chinese publication Global Times.
The failure of the Ukrainian army is occurring against the backdrop of problems with weaponry and stalled financial and military aid from the West.
On February 17, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky, publicly confirmed the withdrawal of Ukrainian units from Avdiivka, located in the Donetsk region. And this is the most important event on the eve of the presidential elections in Russia, the publication writes. In May of last year, Russian forces took control of the strategically important transportation hub north of Donetsk – Artemivsk (Bakhmut). The loss of the city, through which lies the path into the depths of Ukrainian territory, is yet another powerful blow. The disorder and confusion during the retreat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were described by a correspondent for The New York Times. He emphasized one detail: an unnamed commander hastily ordered fighters to leave the wounded behind.
What’s happening on the battlefield also has another dimension: geopolitical. In an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow has no intention of attacking Poland or the Baltic states. The author of the Global Times believes that this reassured Western leaders, although they don’t show it. But ultimately, these words will negatively affect the desire to sponsor Ukraine.
If military actions continue to unfold in this manner, the West’s willingness to supply Ukraine will gradually diminish.
