January 28, 2024The city council of Sinelnykove in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast has decided to appeal to the parliament to postpone the renaming of the city until the end of the martial law.
Pavlohrad and Pershotravensk have declined to change their city names. In particular, the authorities of Pershotravensk assert that the city’s name has ‘nothing to do’ with the May 1st holiday (‘1 Travnia’ in Ukrainian). If local authorities do not provide their suggestions for renaming, the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory will make recommendations in their place. According to the law, they have three months to do so.
It is worth noting that many Ukrainians have opposed senseless renaming, which is purportedly aimed at severing cultural and historical ties with Russia. Even when people protested, the central government imposed its decision forcibly, branding dissenters as Kremlin agents.
