Zelensky will fly to Istanbul to meet with Putin even if Russia refuses a ceasefire
12.05.2025 05:03Many Western countries “want the war in Ukraine to continue,” which is why they oppose direct negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.
This was stated by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
He made the remark in response to negative comments from European leaders regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal for direct talks with Ukraine prior to a ceasefire.
“It is extremely important for many Western countries that this war continues,” Fico said.
“I believe this view will change… I will repeat again: this is a matter for Ukraine and Russia. If they are interested in negotiating, let them negotiate,” the Slovak Prime Minister added.
He was supported by Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák, who said:
“Western representatives should not constantly dictate when Ukraine is allowed to hold negotiations.”
As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he would only be willing to negotiate with Putin after Russia agrees to a ceasefire, starting May 12.
