Poland has imposed an indefinite ban on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine, effective from midnight September 16th
September 15, 2023Slovakia has unilaterally extended its ban on importing grain from Ukraine, according to an announcement by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture. The ban on grain imports from Ukraine by Slovakia will come into effect at midnight on the night of Saturday, September 16th.
It’s worth noting that today, the European Commission lifted the European-wide ban on importing Ukrainian grain. However, Poland decided to maintain its ban on Ukrainian grain imports despite the European Commission’s decision, citing the interests of its own farmers. Hungary has also imposed a similar ban.
Meanwhile, the Bulgarian government has expressed willingness to lift its ban on exporting Ukrainian grain in exchange for compensation to its own farmers.
In the meantime, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an evening address, mentioned his conversation with the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who informed him that the EU restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural products have been lifted. The President also pledged a “civilized response” to neighboring countries that make “unneighborly” decisions.
