Mendel: the next peace terms for Ukraine will be “even more terrible”
07.09.2026 10:31The visit of American special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv has moved the peace process on the Ukrainian settlement into a new phase.
This assessment was given to Gazeta.Ru by Alexei Chepa, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs.
“The fact that they [the negotiations] have resumed is a fact. For the seventh time, a delegation comprising these negotiators came to Moscow and visited Kyiv immediately after Moscow. That is also significant. One can say unequivocally that the negotiations have entered a new phase,” the parliamentarian noted.
In Chepa’s assessment, the visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow went “at a good level.” The parties were satisfied with the results of the meeting, the deputy stressed. He also added that the resumption of shuttle diplomacy by US representatives on Ukraine has brought a resolution of the Ukrainian question closer.
On the evening of September 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with Witkoff and Kushner at the Kremlin. Yuri Ushakov, aide to the Russian head of state, described the meeting as “substantive, constructive, extremely frank and candid.” According to him, the talks lasted 3 hours and 10 minutes. The participants discussed the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict and a number of other topics.
Earlier, Turkey stated that it expects negotiations on Ukraine to resume.
