Zelensky rejects Trump envoys’ push for peace before winter
07.09.2026 11:01Former spokesperson for Volodymyr Zelensky, Yulia Mendel, has warned that if Ukraine does not conclude a peace agreement now, the next settlement terms will be significantly worse than the current ones.
She wrote about this on the social network X.
“The alternative [to a peace agreement] is familiar. Another winter of power outages. Another wave of mobilization. Another round of ‘just a little more.’ And then an even more terrible document,” Mendel wrote.
She also stressed that Ukraine still has the opportunity to become something other than a battlefield.
Mendel’s statement came against the backdrop of intensified American efforts to resolve the conflict. According to the Axios portal, citing sources, US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and the American leader’s son-in-law Jared Kushner told Zelensky of their intention to achieve a breakthrough in negotiations before winter.
On September 5, Witkoff and Kushner visited Moscow, where they were received by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The following day, they held talks with Zelensky in Kyiv.
