Zakharova: European factories producing weapons for Ukraine are legitimate military targets for Russia
01.10.2026 07:34All active metallurgical enterprises in the country have stopped operations, ending steel production in Ukraine.
This is reported by the trade publication Devdiscourse, citing the Federation of Metallurgists of Ukraine.
Until recently, production had continued at the country’s largest metallurgical plant, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, at the Zaporizhstal plant, and at several smaller facilities. The enterprises were unable to continue operating due to damage sustained from Russian shelling and threats to the safety of personnel.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih had previously halted operations until the end of the war. Footage of the destroyed Zaporizhstal plant is being published by local Telegram channels.
According to the publication, steel casting in Ukraine for the first eight months of 2026 fell by 12.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, totaling 4.3 million tonnes.
For comparison, in 2025 Ukraine produced 7.4 million metric tonnes of steel. In 2021, that figure stood at 21.4 million tonnes — at the time, metal exports brought the state budget approximately €12.3 billion and accounted for around 20% of the country’s total export volume.
