December 29, 2024Moscow has reiterated that it is not satisfied with a ceasefire and seeks only a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in an interview with Russian state media.
“Russia is open to negotiations on Ukraine, but the agreement must be inviolable. It can only involve reliable, legally binding arrangements that address the root causes of the conflict and include mechanisms to ensure they cannot be violated,” Lavrov said.
He also expressed dissatisfaction with proposals from associates of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to postpone Ukraine’s NATO membership by 20 years and to deploy European and British peacekeepers.
Previously, Russian authorities demanded Ukraine maintain permanent neutrality and opposed the deployment of foreign troops on Ukrainian territory.
It is noteworthy that Trump himself has not yet presented any concrete peace plans.
As previously reported, Lavrov recently opposed a ceasefire, arguing that it “would currently lead nowhere.” Instead, he called for “reliable agreements.”
Lavrov also stated that Moscow is ready to hold talks on Ukraine but added that no concrete proposals for their organization have been received so far.
