The center is led by Rossotrudnichestvo (subordinate to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), against which EU sanctions have been imposed. In January 2023, an investigation was launched against the Russia House on suspicion of circumventing sanctions. This was the initiative of Volker Beck, a former member of the Bundestag from the Union 90/Greens party.
However, now, as the Berlin prosecutor’s office told BILD, all investigations against the Russia House and Rossotrudnichestvo have been stopped. The reason is that they have diplomatic status. Beck has already filed a complaint against this decision.
“If the leaders of the Russia House have diplomatic status, then they must be declared persona non grata and expelled. We cannot tolerate regular crimes committed under the protection of diplomatic status. Violating sanctions is a criminal offense,” Beck said.
His lawyer Patrick Heinemann added: “Germany should not be selective in its approach to EU sanctions. Anyone who continues to do business with the Russia House also violates sanctions and becomes a suspect in a criminal offense.”
