November 27, 2024At least 60,000 to 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in the war with Russia, and another 400,000 have been severely injured and can no longer fight.
These figures were provided by the British magazine The Economist.
The publication studied various sources in an attempt to estimate the losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which are not officially disclosed.
“To quantitatively assess Ukraine’s losses since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, we began by collecting data on combat losses from leaked or published reports by intelligence agencies, defense ministry officials, researchers, and open-source intelligence. These reports are difficult to verify independently. Additionally, missing and presumed dead soldiers are not always registered. However, the data provides an approximate picture of the death toll. They suggest that at least 60,000 to 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died so far. Another 400,000 may be too severely wounded to continue fighting. These numbers do not include civilian casualties, for which there is surprisingly little data. It is believed that tens of thousands of civilians have died,” the article states.
Russia, according to Western intelligence, has lost up to 200,000 soldiers killed.
“In both countries, the number of battle deaths, as a percentage of the population, is higher than the combined death toll in the Vietnam and Korean Wars. Their battlefield casualties are rapidly approaching the losses the United States suffered in World War II,” the magazine writes.
