‘To face the possibility of being sent to the front lines or to evade and face punishment and condemnation’: Ukrainian men now face a choice
May 27, 2024Today, on May 27, the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine extended the obligations imposed on the former head of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, Vsevolod Knyazev, who is suspected of receiving a $2.7 million bribe. However, his electronic bracelet was removed.
Transparency International Ukraine reported this.
The court extended the following obligations for Knyazev: to appear before the prosecutor or court upon first request; not to leave Ukraine; to refrain from communicating with witnesses; and to surrender his passports for foreign travel.
The lawyers claimed that the bracelet allegedly negatively affects Knyazev’s health and that he has no electricity or connection at home for six hours, making the bracelet ineffective.
It should be noted that Knyazev was released on bail in the winter after posting a bail amount of 18 million UAH (€413,879). Initially, the bail was set at 107.3 million UAH (approximately €2,467,177), but the court gradually reduced it by five times.
The lawyer mentioned that one of the financial companies posted the bail for the judge.
In May last year, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office detained Vsevolod Knyazev on bribery charges. According to the investigation, this money was given to the judge by the owner of the “Finance and Credit” group, oligarch Kostiantyn Zhevago, as payment for a favorable Supreme Court decision.
