“The U.S. will impose sanctions on Ukraine’s leadership,” – MP Dubinsky stated
January 22, 2025EU sanctions against Russia may expire on January 31 due to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocking their renewal.
This was reported by Bloomberg, citing sources.
According to the publication’s sources, the bloc has no backup plan for extending the sanctions.
It is worth noting that the Hungarian Prime Minister has repeatedly blocked EU decisions in the past but has ultimately backed down. On Tuesday, Orban criticized the sanctions regime, which must be renewed every six months through a unanimous decision by all 27 member states, claiming that the sanctions harm Europe’s economy.
In December, Orban also expressed a desire to wait for Donald Trump’s inauguration before deciding on an extension.
Meanwhile, the EU continues to discuss a new sanctions package, which will also require Budapest’s approval. EU Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis has stated that the EU should target Russian LNG exports.
It is also worth noting that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced his intention to veto further financial support for Ukraine within the European Union.
