EU’s military aid plans for Ukraine encounter roadblocks in ammunition and funding delivery
November 14, 2023The EU won’t be able to deliver the promised million rounds of ammunition to Ukraine by March 2024.
This statement was made by the German Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius.
“It can be assumed with certainty that the goal of a million rounds of ammunition will not be achieved,” Reuters quoted him as saying.
He noted that EU countries will continue to ramp up production.
However, the day before, the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, stated that the EU doesn’t have “its own depot of ammunition” for Ukraine.
This implies that while production is being increased, expectations for ammunition deliveries from stockpiles should not be high.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that more than half of the planned time had passed, and only 30% of the planned ammunition had been delivered.
Dmytro Kuleba, the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the promise of ammunition deliveries to Ukraine by the EU is hindered by the “dismal state of the defense industry and depots, bureaucracy, and a large number of unsynchronized things.”
