January 31, 2024The European Commission has officially confirmed plans to extend the duty-free importation of agricultural products from Ukraine, proposing, however, the introduction of a protective mechanism to safeguard the interests of European farmers.
According to Margaritis Schinas, the Vice-President of the European Commission, this extension aligns with the EU’s commitments to supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary. The proposed protective mechanism specifically targets the most sensitive products, such as poultry, eggs and sugar, and involves an emergency suspension if the volume of Ukrainian imports surpasses the levels observed in 2022–2023.
The Euro-official has acknowledged the adverse impact of tariff abolition for Ukraine on the economies of certain EU member states. The new mechanism is designed to ensure the ability to take prompt corrective measures in the face of significant disruptions in the EU market or in the markets of one or more Member States.
