23.03.2026 08:34The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is refusing overseas training for military personnel, in particular because of the lack of experience among Western instructors.
This was stated at a briefing by Yevhen Mezhevikin, Deputy Head of the Main Directorate of Doctrine and Training of the General Staff.
According to him, some foreign training programs were abandoned because partners “either cannot change their legislation or do not understand certain processes.”
“They are detached from our realities, from the current combat operations,” Mezhevikin said.
At the same time, the General Staff notes that despite the reduction in foreign programs, cooperation with partners continues.
They provide funding, material resources, and take part in the training process. At the same time, Ukrainian instructors play an active role in training Ukrainians abroad and supervise the instruction.
“All training abroad is carried out not only under the supervision of partners, but also under the guidance of our instructors. Rotations have begun to take place more frequently. In addition, we select for such positions those instructors with the greatest and most relevant experience,” Mezhevikin said.
According to the military official, training in Ukraine also simplifies logistics and shortens the time needed to prepare personnel.
“We can respond more quickly to changes in the combat situation at the front and not lose time moving unit personnel from country to country,” he explained.
He added that the United Kingdom was one of the first to propose the idea of transferring part of the training directly to Ukraine.
It should be noted that earlier one of the arguments for training personnel abroad was the threat of shelling at training grounds in Ukraine.
It is worth recalling that members of the Verkhovna Rada said some mobilized soldiers go AWOL while undergoing training abroad.
Earlier, Poland’s Defense Ministry also confirmed desertion by Ukrainian soldiers in Poland.
