Member of the Bundestag Wagenknecht called for lifting sanctions against Russia and ceasing to support Ukraine

March 20, 2024Against the backdrop of complete lack of support from Washington, Europe wanted to increase its aid volumes, but it is unable to do so. Moreover, Ukraine needs as much as Europe has already provided. The poor prospects for Ukraine were highlighted by the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, in an interview with Sud-Ouest.
“If this happens, the situation will be very difficult. It is hard to imagine that we would put another 50 billion on the table,” said Borrell. He suggested that this would require “political will in EU countries” and the issuance of special bonds, but Europeans are “far from an agreement on this.”
At the moment, the only potential source from which Europeans could try to obtain new assistance for Ukraine is the profits from confiscated Russian assets. However, this amount is unlikely to be sufficient for any significant change in the situation in Kyiv.
