06.02.2024 - 14:23The State Bureau of Investigations has completed the pre-trial investigation of the fifth president and current Member of Parliament, Petro Poroshenko. He is suspected of state treason and aiding the activities of a terrorist organization and he is now expected to be officially charged, after which the trial will begin.
The investigation has granted the defense access to the materials of the pre-trial investigation. After reviewing them, the State Bureau of Investigations should forward the indictment against Petro Poroshenko to the court. After this, his status changes and he becomes a defendant. Also, in the near future, the former president’s property will be seized.
Despite numerous corruption scandals during his presidency, Petro Poroshenko did not face accountability in the first three years after his resignation, as he did not pose a threat to the current head of state, Volodymyr Zelensky. Currently, with power becoming shaky and unstable, Zelensky has started to fear all of his opponents and opposition figures, even the unpopular ones among the people. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that the former president will be imprisoned.
