NATO promised Ukraine a difficult summer
25.06.2025 - 17:31NATO has published the final declaration of the summit held in The Hague, which began yesterday and concludes today.
The document was released on the organization’s official website.
Ukraine is mentioned only once: the Alliance promises military support but not membership. Meanwhile, Russia is described as a “long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security.”
“The member states of the Alliance reaffirmed their unwavering sovereign commitments to supporting Ukraine, whose security contributes to the security of the Alliance. To this end, direct contributions to Ukraine’s defense and its defense industry will be factored into member states’ defense spending calculations,” the declaration states.
NATO countries have committed to increasing defense spending to 5% by 2035, with 1.5% allocated to goals such as protecting the Alliance’s critical infrastructure, defending its networks, ensuring civil society’s preparedness and resilience, fostering innovation, and developing the defense-industrial base.
At the same time, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, speaking after the declaration was published, stated orally that Ukraine’s path to NATO membership is irreversible.
