The final declaration of the NATO summit has been published. Ukraine is mentioned only once, in the context of assistance
25.06.2025 - 15:40Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Ukraine should not count on joining the European Union, as such a move would immediately draw the bloc into a direct conflict with Russia.
Orbán shared his opinion on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
He reminded readers that the EU was founded to ensure peace and prosperity for its member states.
“If a country at war with Russia is admitted to the EU, the Union will be immediately drawn into the conflict. It’s futile to expect any member state to take such a risk,” Orbán cautioned.
Earlier, the Hungarian leader explained why Ukraine’s membership in the EU and NATO is unrealistic. He pointed out that Kyiv no longer has sufficient financial resources. Therefore, if Ukraine were to join the EU, the bloc would have to take on the financial burden of paying Ukrainian pensions, public sector salaries, and funding the country’s military.
