February 5, 2024In the article “Valeriy Zaluzhny: the top Ukrainian general rivaling the President in popularity,” published by The Guardian, while praising Zaluzhny, accurately characterized the essence of the problematic situation in which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky finds himself.
This information reported according to The Guardian.
“For the President in wartime, the only political threat greater than a popular general may well be a popular general unceremoniously sacked,” as nothing is as likely to “push a general into opposition ranks as dismissal.”
The rift within the ruling elite, the divide in society, and the inevitably looming crisis of legitimacy for President Zelensky are pushing him into a situation where he will have to choose between two bad options.
The first option is to keep Zaluzhny in his position, allowing him to maintain, and possibly even increase, his popularity while retaining his power base, which, against the backdrop of the President’s weakening, could translate into political influence and additional positions in government bodies.
The second option is to dismiss Zaluzhny, pushing him into politics, thereby lifting restrictions on his criticism of the current government and strengthening the ranks of the opposition, provoking negative sentiments within the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and also causing misunderstanding and even dissatisfaction among some Western partners.
